A Strange Survey Question

Today, I got an e-mail from the University of Chicago asking me to participate in a Student Health Survey. I want prizes as much as anybody else, so I agreed. Guess what the first question was?

What is your Gender: a)Male, b)Female, c)MTF/FTM, d)Other.

I'm amused that they thought the transgendered were a large enough group to get their own survey question. But I'm completely puzzled about what the other category is. Do you think there are amoebas attending school?

Rachel you completely overlook the community of those who reject arbitrary divisions such as gender and seek redress from discrimination in our culture

I think I figured out what other is. According to liberal dogma, a fetus is part of a woman's body. So, a woman pregnant with a boy is a two-sexed individual, yet she isn't transgendered.

What about a hermaphrodite? They aren't male-to-female or vice versa.

Someone with experience in social science surveys once told me that whenever someone fills out "Other" for race, that person is invariably white. And so researchers just lump the "Other" category into white. This way, they don't have to hurt the feelings of people who don't like categorizing their race.

I wouldn't be surprised if something similar were happening here. Some group is going to be offended if they have to mark down "Male" (say) but they are really (insert your best guess here).
The researchers will then just translate that back into Male for statistical purposes!
